I used what Brion Toss jokingly calls the "shovel splice" (Rigger's
Apprentice, p. 92) to join nylon 3-strand and chain on a previous boat.
That might be the one Bill referred to in his msg. Not so pretty, but
effective. I liked the way it distributed the load along a strong overlap
of chain and rope rather than concentrate the load on three strands and one
link. I think I worked back down the chain 2 or 3 links before seizing
everything, just for a little extra security. I didn't have a windlass on
that boat, though, so no experience with how it would work on the gypsy.
