I have watched this thread with some interest. I was talking with a delivery captain about his experiences in the south pacific. He stated that as long as he could keep it afloat he could bring it home. Having lost several masts and being able to rig some sail to make it in on, his feeling was hull integrity was the most important thing. He was using forward-looking sonar and like it. That idea made sense to me. That was the first use of these units I had heard of.
My brother has a unit on his boat and can ask him some direct questions. Being an engineer type the questions need to be very specific. Brand, how long he has had it, what he thinks of it's preformance.
What I do know is it is transom mounted, he was happy to not do a haul out to install it or put an other hole in the hull. He uses it in the Sacramento Delta. Muddy, shallow water and he has commented that he can see the sides of the river so it must present a 180-degree, or close to it view.
I have put in a call to him and if he isn't off diving one of the remote reefs of the world we should hear back.
Rob
