Actually, the FAQ for the Echo Pilot suggests mounting it at the keel.
That's likely to protect the transducer from being broken off if struck by
something near the bow. The transducer sticks out several inches from the
hull, and it's somewhat vulnerable, so selecting a mounting location that
will give it some protection makes a lot of sense.
If it's mounted next to the keel, and the keel is - say - 10 feet aft of the
bow, then the forward look in shallow waters won't be much further than the
bow.
As I mentioned earlier, this instrument appears to be valuable for bluewater
sailors, not the coastal variety.
