From their FAQ:
*How far does the F.L.S. "see" ahead?* The F.L.S. shows the seabed 3 to 5
times the depth ahead when on a flat muddy bottom (e.g. river or estuary).
At longer ranges this ratio increases. This ratio increases to 8 to 9 times
if the seabed shoals upward. Rocky bottoms are better targets than mud, and
hard vertical surfaces like quay walls, rocks or coral reefs will often be
seen at 330 to 500 feet on the F.L.S. units even in relatively shallow
water.
Keep in mind that the "depth" referenced above is the distance between
transducer and sea bottom. If your transducer is only 6 feet off the
bottom, common in many areas of the East Coast of the US, then your forward
look is 18-30 feet forward of the transducer. Unless you're going very
slow, that doesn't leave much room for reactions.
