Two catamarans that I personally know of have demasted on San Francisco Bay.
Both did it two times and with new riggs, when I asked why I was told it is
as much art as science.
Well, a Privilege 52 catamaran what i would consider a somewhat bullet proof
cat was dismasted in the BVI's July last year - it got caught in a squall
and the mast just folded - thankfully no one got hurt. We were out sailing at
the same time in the monohull did not see the dismasting and thought the
weather was 'nasty' but nothing grossly exceptional 35 knots in the squalls. When i
spoke to the skipper/captain after the event (it is a skippered charter
boat) he said that nothing let go - all the rigging was still in one piece - the
mast just folded under the strain.

David
