Boat pricing is always tough, but it looks to me the base price on a
V42 is around $350K, base price on a Nordhavn 40 is around $425K. The
last N40 I delivered about 2 years ago was fully equipped (incl
watermaker) for around $500K (I forget exactly, it was a Canadian
owner and I don't recall the exact exchange). We left the dock in
Dana Point CA (near Los Angeles) and went non-stop 1000 nms to
Vancouver BC )to weather), how many new boats - power or sail - do a
shake down like that? I probably have 20 or 25 non-stop trips from
SoCal to either Seattle, BC, or Portland OR - all on brand new boats,
all north to weather, and all without a hitch.
But there are less expensive options out there too - I just pointed
out Nordhavn because its well known, and has several
circumnavigations and ocean crossings to their credit; and the
quality is roughly equilivlent to a Valiant.
Want a power-circumnavigator for less? Try the George Buehler
designed, Chinese built Diesel Duck 46, brand-new in sail-away
condition for $340K. One guy had one built (actually, a 44-footer,
$250K in 2002), and sailed it to San Francisco on its own bottom from
Hong Kong. He stopped in Oz and several islands along the way. Ended
up doing about 15,000 miles - eastward. This was 2004 or so, and he
single-handed most of the way. The folks doing these ventures are not
titans of business, just ordinary folks who have a little extra money
and a whole lotta dream (a good friend is a retired sheriff who just
had a Diesel Duck built and is intent on circumnavigating).

If this is the same person I am thinking of (and I am pretty sure it
is - it's the only story I know where an owner returned to sail, and
in this example, from Valiant to Nordhavn back to Valiant), I
delivered his Nordhavn 57 to Cabo. It was my last delivery before
exiting the business. Last I talked to him a few months ago, he had
contacted Bob Perry and was having a non-stock Valiant 50-something
designed and built, not a 42. He sold the Nordhavn a couple months
ago - he truly loved sailing and was skeptical of power from the
start. For this person, economy of sail was not a factor in his
decision - just love of being under sail. And I applaud his
conviction.
