I just checked the Nordhavn website for their brokerage listings. The four
40s they have listed are all asking more than a fully-equipped, brand new
Valiant 42. Since I was a dealer for Valiants until last year, I'm quite
familiar with their fully-equipped, delivered cost. I do not know the
delivered cost of a new Nordhavn 40, but based upon the brokerage listings,
I'd guess it's at least one-third more expensive than the Valiant.

Look, I realize this is a sail-oriented list, and this may be heresy

For the most part. I agree with you. Many of the modern power cruisers are
far more comfortable, easier to operate with fewer crew, and - yes - safer
than sailboats of similar size. However, they *are* considerably more
expensive to purchase, to maintain, and to operate than a sailboat traveling
    the same distance per year.

Interesting story that may mean nothing. A friend, who owned a Valiant 50,
sold it a few years ago and purchased a - somewhat larger - Nordhavn. While
cruising in the Cabo area, he invited a Valiant in the same anchorage
alongside, and filled his tanks with fresh water and his freezer with ice.
But while he was visiting with the Valiant's owners, he realized how much he
missed his old sailboat, so he called the factory and ordered a new 42. Now
he has the best of both worlds.
