I've spent some time in the open ocean on small boats. For me, the primary
disadvantage is the boat's ride. Small boats without active stabilization
tend to roll unpredictably, often in fairly gentle conditions. In contrast,
a sail boat (under sail) tends to stay more or less at the same angle of
    heel.

All that motion becomes exhausting after a few hours. On one of the smaller
CG cutters I served aboard, the underway routine was stand watch, eat, and
sleep. The boat's motion made ship's work difficult to dangerous.
