Well, I'm certainly _not_ a power boater but you've just got to
admire a relatively small power boat going long distances across open
sea. For those under sail, when the wind stops, it _will_ start
blowing again but you may have to wait a bit. When the fuel runs out,
you just sit there and sit there until either the fuel barge comes
along, the USCG drops a few barrels, a passing cargo ship transfers
some fuel, or they get rescued. Despite the best planning, fuel
calculations, critical, could easily have errors or "errors" due to
weather conditions and current. True, gallons onboard are enough to
cross just about anything unless they are significantly off course or
conditions bad enough.
I guess everyone has their own idea about how to go to sea but for me
I think it is essentially a matter of 1) cost of fuel vs cost of
sails (~ $20k vs ~ $7k for our boat) vs the amount of cash available
to use, 2) the constant noise of the engine/genset, 3) general motion
likely to be felt at sea for power vs sail, and 4) personal
preference. Power cruising is just not my "thing" but then I'm not
everyone. For some it might be just the thing they need to do and for
them I say go for it. It's far better to "sail" however you can
"sail" than to worry about how it is, or "should be" done.
