The CSY was made with the lower 18" of the keel in concrete which
could be cut off if the shoal draft would be better for the cruising
area (such as the Bahamas or the Chesapeake). Some of them were made
from the beginning with the shoal draft, and they MAY have had
additional ballast added, but I can't be sure about that because
there's no way to tell without taking the boat apart.
AFAIK, the only disadvantage to the shoal draft 44 (which we have) is
that it will make a little more leeway. As Steve notes - there are
quite a few shoal draft CSYs that have circumnavigated. The
walkthroughs that I know about are ALL shoal draft (with one
exception) and almost all of them came originally with the tall mast
which makes them quite a bit more tender.
We have a shoal draft CSY, and I also keep a list of them and records
of what they've done and where they've been, so if you want to write
me off the list and ask about specific boats I can check my records.
I usually put out a list of CSYs for sale a couple of times a year -
there is an email CSY list.
