How dangerous/bad/undesirable would a shoal draft boat be for passage making
and heavy weather? The CSY 44 is one of the boats I am looking closely at,
and it was made with both a shoal draft (4' 11") and a deep draft (6' 6")
and I have also seen a couple advertised with a 5' 6" draft. All of these
boats check out very well in terms of Capsize Screening Value and Roll
Acceleration, but those calculations don't use draft, they use displacement,
beam and LWL. I know that righting moment will improve as the ballast gets
further from the waterline (i.e., deeper), but I don't know how much
difference it will make in seaworthiness in rough weather. There are a
couple of really nice shoal draft CSY 44's for sale and I am trying to
decide whether to look at them or cross them off my list of candidates. I
definitely plan to cross the Atlantic at some point after we begin cruising,
so I want to make sure the boat I get is capable. Any thoughts, ideas or
opinions?
Thanks,
Patrick
