    I replaced my old, dead radar with a Furuno 1715 and think it is reliable
    and delivers a lot of bang for the buck. The 1715 is the "top end of the
    bottom end" of the Furuno line, which includes some pretty flashy and fancy
    stuff. It does support NMEA 0183 and have a couple of other whizbang
    feaures but is otherwise decidedly un-fancy and straight-ahead (silver/gray
    monochrome screen, max 24-mi range, and the usual stuff like VBL, range
    ring, etc.).

    As well, on my previous boat I had an old, basic, green-screen Furuno that
    worked just fine after many years of service. FWIW, you see Furunos on
    quite a few of the commercial boats around here (Seattle). No vested
    interest in the company or product; just passin' along an opinion. Cheers,
