Doug... I'm in a similar boat (pardon the pun) and decided to join a local
sailing club, as well as take a couple of refresher classes. I'm in NY, so boat
ownership is an even bigger commitment than in most parts of the country. We
have excessively high storage and maintenance costs here, as well as a
relatively short (to warmer climes) season. At any rate, specific recommendations
obviously won't help. But I'd get on Google and start searching for sailing
schools, clubs, etc. in your area. In my case, I'll be able to sail all
season on larger daysailers (23'-25') for around $900. Renting larger cruisers are
an option at several locations in my area, at additional cost, of course. Of
course, nowhere near what I'd spend on keeping my own boat. Not the same
thing, of course. But a good way to get my sea legs back and confirm for myself
(and my wife) that I'm serious. Best of luck! Keith
