Tried to post this earlier but for some reason it did
not go through.
When we decided to get into sailing i attended
numerous boat shows and met a lot of brokers and there
was the good the bad and the ugly. I did a lot of
reading on what i wanted in a boat and with a complete
lack of knowledge on of boats most brokers just wanted
to sell me a boat. We did meet Ted Novakowski of
Sound Yachts in Westbrook,Ct. who took time to
understand what we may or may not want to do with the
boat. He actually worked with us for 2 years before i
brought a boat. As a former cruiser in his younger
days Ted knew what worked and what did not. He also
was able to guide me on things that would really need
to cruise and what we did not want. We actually moved
from Ct to Miami, Fl and still worked for over a year
with Ted before we made the purchase.
I have met other brokers who don't even know their
boats or how they work or how they are made.
So if i can give any advise, take your time - learn
the positive and negatives of each boat, read a lot,
and find a broker who is a former cruiser and a
teacher. By the SSCA has a great board with a lot of
experienced cruisers who are willing to share their
experience so go there and ask questions, they may
help.
We ended up with a Jeanneau 40DS and love her. She
has her positives and negatives and Ted made sure we
understood each. For us she is a great boat, will go
anywhere we want to go and fit well within our budget.
