Often, there's no problem running north in the Gulf Stream during the warmer
months. Typically, you'll see breezes out of the south; that combined with
the GS current will give you a great daily run. The GS stays fairly close
to the shoreline until it passes Cape Hatteras, when the shoreline moves a
bit westward, while the GS moves a bit eastward, but you can go further
offshore and take advantage of the current.
4-5 days motoring in the ICW versus 1 day sailing in the Atlantic to go
between Beaufort, NC and Norfolk, VA. If the weather's good, that's a
no-brainer. If you go in at Charleston, add another 5-7 days of motoring.
That's crew abuse! :)
I agree with Cap'n Dave's statement about calendars. Remember, Mother
Nature always sets the schedule.
