Well......
Most of the tiller AP are not strong engough to use belowdecks. You need some leverage. Plus you would like to get one that automatically disengages. I read the story of a guy recently who collided with a trawler in the middel of the Atlantic (between the Azores and England) because the mechanical disengage of his below deck autopilot did not work.
I prefer to have a Windwane that has it's own steering. Good backup. Obviously below-deck autopilot is much better. Having a self-contained above deck system for emergencies is not a bad idea though. Since one could be hooked up in 15 minutes if you have a regular binnacle and wheel.

Mike, I absolutely agree. My son has one on his Alberg 30 and mine
just arrived about a month ago and is eagerly awaiting its
installation and can't wait until it's out of warranty:-)
BTW, there couldn't be a bigger waste of money than an above deck AP
on a long range crusing boat and that's all one could get for
$1,000. A below deck AP is considerably more than windvane
steering, when all is said and done.
Two features that made the Cape Horn an easy decision for me was the
ability to have it work directly off of the steering quadrant (I
have hydraulic steering) and the fact that one can buy the least
powerful, above deck, tiller actuating AP and use it below deck.
Add a remote and your all set:-). And, the reason that above deck
AP's are not worth a darn becomes mute.
