discussing these things are great - i am new to
sailing and after a lot of research and looking at my
    age when i started (55 then 60 now) i knew i needed a
new boat that i could sail single handed if needed - i
bought a Jeanneau ds40 which is a go anyplace boat
even if i decide not to leave the coast the boat can
but if i decide to sail across the pond she will do it
    - also with a shoal draft (4'11") again on purpose as
we may want to go to places with shallows - and had a
    few goodies put on
radar - at night & out a few miles i want to see
others - only run when out of sight of land
743 amps of power - she is a power hog
autopilot - looked at wind vane and said no
                 but is under constant review
    upgraded windlass
    upgraded anchoring system
    upgraded altenator
a few other goodies to numerous to mention

as an exmountaineer who was actively involved in
mountain search and rescue - i was a backcounty emt so
medical and navagation is not an issue (althrough i
love my hand held gps - had to use it to get back from
the bahamas when lightening took out all of my
    electrical)
i am studying weather and will get my ham
weather is the most important thing i need to know as
i have no intention of sailing blind into heavy
weather - if it comes i want to know and be prepared
but if at anchor do not want to sail into dantes
    inferno -
ham - to keep in touch with 2 sons (ex marines) who
will look out after and make sure i behave myself but
also for discussion with other cruisers. one of my
sons will take care of my finances so need to talk
    with him occassionally
i will get a spinnaker, watermaker is under review,
probably not get certified as a diver but built a
system that i can dive on the bottom with a electrical
    compressor for cleaning
will put on solar not wind unless solar will not
    handle the total recharge.
have a soft dingy with a 3+ hp motor - just to get
    around -
still need a life raft i think - will be small
    be
beyond that i agree with i think it was peter - my
house is for sale and as soon as it is sold the dock
lines come off and SoulMates and venture forth.
sorry this is so long but it took me almost 3 years to
spec the boat with the knowledge that i will leave
after i turn 60 - so the timeframe was set and i
    worked around that
    chuck and SoulMates
