I've done a lot of worlwide traveling and there are a few things I've
    learned for communicating.
Try to learn food words: chicken, pork, beef, fish and sea food,
(vegitarian or no mammals or what you need to if you have specific
dietary needs or limitations), bread, cheese. Learn different fluids
that you may need: water, juice, gasoline, wine or alcohol. Learn words
for toilet, water closet (or what have you) and words for diaria,
constipation and emergency. Numbers and colors are very important.
In worst case scenario remember everyone loves a fool. Try to mime what
you need or want and don't worry about being silly. Colors are important
because you can't mime a color.
If you go to a country that has a different number character buy a watch
with those numbers. Price tags if there are any suddenly are very
    understandable.
