    Consider a different antenna. When I took my "ham" radio class, we were
    shown an "Outbacker" antenna by a sailor who had sailed across the Pacific.
    He reported excellent communications with US-based amateur radio stations
    throughout his cruise. Since amateur and SSB operate in the same HF ranges,
    the Outbacker should work for you as well.

    It can be clamped on to your stern rail.
