Hi John,
My first question to you is why would you ever want to install an RF antenna on your backstay? I know this seems to be common practice but I have never figured out why.
Before spending a pile of money and cutting your backstay here's what I suggest.
Go to Radio Shack and buy their $5 radio antenna kit. Basically it's a roll of wire with an insulator or two (I forget exactly what's in it). Find a spot where you can run a light halyard up the mast that is away from the stays but near your SSB. You may need to add a pulley to the mast somewhere. Cut the antenna wire to the proper length, tape the antenna to the halyard every 3-4 feet, run the antenna wire up the mast, tie off the halyard to rail, solder your insulated cable to the antenna, attach the other end to the SSB and then press transmit and talk.
We rigged up a "temporary" antenna like this on our Nauticat and left it like this for over 1 year. We got excellent reception as we crossed the atlantic, 5/5 (full strength send and receive) such that several other nearby boats who weren't sending well inquired about our unique transmission characteristics :)
We since sold that boat and bought a catamaran. The FR antenna is rigged the same way except that the RF antenna is connected to a short piece of halyard at each end and is suspended freely between the mast and the side railing. It's been like that for a year and hasn't fallen down yet :)
Good luck, have fun,
dwight

Subject: [world-cruising] Backstay insulation
Would appreciate advice on installing insulator in my backstay.
I have installed a SSB radio in my Jeanneau SO37 and must put an
insulator in the backstay. My backstay has a "stem ball" swaged end
at the top. This necessitates pushing the wire up through the stem
ball gate to remove, and pulling all back through the small opening
to reinstall.
Problem: I cannot simply have an insulator swaged to the stay...it
will not fit back through the gate.
If you have ideas on this, I would really appreciate some help!!
Thanks,
John McBroom
