Yes, I've done it like that too and it is a pain!

BTW, to all out there, if you ever use or may use chlorine in your
tanks and are setting up to back flush from them (it's the easiest
way to set it up) make sure you have a charcoal filter between the
tank and the back flush to the watermaker. Chlorine will kill your
membrane pretty much over night.
