As a boy dad won't allow us gasoline for the outboard. He felt it was too dangerous and explosive. So we learned to dock 'dead stick' into the wind. We started with a 22-foot Pearson Ensign, Rhodes 19 and Pearson Ariel. Had to just learn our forward momentum, then drop the sails so we would stall right at the dock. Step off and tie off. Practice braking with a warp.
If you are referring to a Mediterranean style jetty with a stern tie, take a look at Kedging.

One of the techniques I find that helps me is learning to lasso a pile
    or bit.

It takes a lot of practice, but once learned you can easily capture a
piling or bit 20' or so away.

Does anyone have any good techniques for mooring single-handed to a
    jetty?

    Bow or stern to?

Any good tricks that you'd like to share?

    Thanks,
    Ruvane.
