The area that is marked off limits on the Moorings charts is the coral head
field south of Little Camanoe. The pass between Little Camanoe and Great
Camanoe is not prohibited by Moorings (or any other charter company down
there to my knowledge, as it is the only recommended way to go). They have
done a lot of blasting in that coral head field while extending the airport
runway, but it is still so full of coral heads that it is still considered
off-limits.
It is extremely easy for charter customers to end up in that area if they
are headed east over the north side of Tortola. When coming from that
direction it is often totally impossible to discern Little Camanoe at all.
It just blends into Great Camanoe and looks like one island instead of two.
Charterers can't tell where the pass is, and they end up going south of
Little Camanoe--right through the fields of coral heads.
When going west (as Keith will be doing), the pass between the Camanoes is
easily visible once you get near it. The only way to go for anyone on a
charter boat.

The Mooring chart indeed shows the passage to be off limits due to
shallow reefs. There should also be a small island just to the west and
at the south end of Camanoe. You can transit between this island and
Camanoe to let you get on your way. It's narrow but has good depth.
We've actually gone through the area that's restricted and it's easily
doable under motor and with someone at the bow.
Cheers,
Mike
which Camanoe are you talking about here?
I think your not really addressing the issue here if the passage is off
limits to Moorings Charterers it matters not if the US Navy could take a
nuclear
powered aircraft carrier through there - it is NO GO if your on a Moorings
boat.
