Next message: Chris Coates: "[world-cruising] adios, for awhile"
oh sure Richard,
I am running behind on the emails so I apologize for the delay in answering.
Life is kinda busy right now. I am trying to keep myself moving forward in
the right direction. Thank you for the positive words and they mean so much
to me. I have been a paraplegic now, well this may will be 16 years now and
I never dreamed of being this way....this long. Your in denial at first and
the thoughts when I was in rehab of 16 years down the road....well sitting
here right now thinking about it, is a bit mind boggling. I have a tendency
not to look back and sitting here doing just that, well it still seems like
yesterday for me when my life changed. It feels like I havent accomplished
enough doing that but I know that I have done more than I realize at times
as well. People might think, oh well she has been that way a long time now
but the realization is that every day brings new challenges so I cannot be
fixated on yesterdays nor look to far in the future. It is like the quote
"you can change the wind but you can change your sails," well that is what
it is like for me living as a paraplegic now. The sail changes happen often
because as we have to do on a sailboat, my challenges require continual
problem solving to ensure that I am healthy, have a home and all the
necessary needs met from day to day. I have to work out my upper body and
that often happens with all the activities that I have to do each day with
pushing my chair, transfers in and out of the car, bed or shower to name a
few. I find there is no replacement for a healthy regime of eating and
exercise. I dont eat diet foods except I do drink diet coke and I eat in
moderation. I allow myself a cupcake now and then but I dont keep junk food
in the house otherwise. Instead of butter to flavor everything, I use
garlic and onions to name a couple of spices and flavorings. I dont punish
myself by depriving myself but again...I MAKE MYSELF eat in moderation...the
keywords is make myself and why they are in caps. We all need our comfort
foods however where most of us get into trouble is eating in front of the
tv...I have fruit for that...grapes, apples, tangerines, bananas etc. It
gives me a natural sugar and I had gained a considerable amount of weight in
the beginning but I have now lost it over the last couple of years...total
of eighty pounds. It all boils down to learning not to deprive yourself and
giving those to yourself as little rewards each week. I dont know if I
answered your question but let me know if I did or not. Just stay in shape
the best you can and something as simple as walking three times a week for
thirty minutes can help...I got to go and take a peek at all these emails
and ttyl
fair winds
