    Hi Eric -
That's what I've always done also. But once, when mailing some magazines
the clerk asked what I was mailing because I'd written "Bound Material" on
the box. When I said magazines he said technically it wasn;t supposed to
ship with that rate because it was intended to be for material without any
commercial adverts. - like school books, novels, etc - but not magazines.
He still used the book rate and I totally agree it's a very loose
regulation! ;-) I wish they'd say more specifically what they will allow
in the boxes - instead of legal verbage often open to interpretation.

Having said all that, I just went to the USPS website for definition - and
there's 2 things we;re talking about here - "bound material" and "book
    rate".

According to the website, bound material is:" Bound Printed Matter service
is a cost efficient way to mail permanently-bound sheets of advertising,
promotional, directory or editorial material such as catalogs and
    phonebooks."

While "Book Rate" is - "Media MailŪ service is a cost efficient way to mail
books, sound recordings, recorded video tapes, printed music, and recorded
computer-readable media (such as CDs, DVDs, and diskettes). Media Mail can
    not contain advertising except.."

I think the clerk helping me was wrong. I had "Bound Material" written on
the box - and I think he was remembering the rules for "Book rate" or "Media
    Mail"

Sorry if I confused anyone - I was given wrong info (IMHO) by a USPS
employee. But I believe there;s a way to ship printed material very
cheaply - like we were discussing.

    Sincerely,
    Larry T (Catalina 27)

that's very cheap. Magazines are not supposed to ship with this rate
but sometimes the PO doesn;t inspect the package closely - and, the
    regs. are ambiguous.--

Whenever mailing boxes of books, magazines, etc, I've always just said
that it's printed material and have never been questioned further. I
wasn't trying to get away with anything I just didn't know any better
and no one has ever informed me otherwise. And yes, it is quite cheap
    to ship that way.
