I forget the exact laws here,
but had he disregarded the order he would have faced legal penalties
whenever he next reached port.

This very subject has been covered on this forum before, some time back.
Upshot was, probaby not. They would have to prove that he was in danger or a
danger to others. Not likely since his boat came out so well.
In any case, I think it is a matter of princple...who knows my boat better,
me or them? And if I do decide to committ sucide in international waters,
that's my buisness. Take anybody that wants off, but if the Captian/owner
wants to stay, that's his look-out!
Again, biggest mistake was crew selection...well, besides leaving is such
bad weather.
I have had 'guests' pressed on me by friends, who once we were well beyond
the break water decided that we were in mortal danger due to 25+ kts of
wind and moderate heeling (just fun sailing for my boat!), and demanded we
run aground so they could swim ashore in 50 deg water.
He was the Captian, he should have had control, including any Maydays. If he
had done so, he would have come out better.
Maybe 'crew trouble' was one reason he was reported to have resorted to
liquid consultation at the height of the storm. <G> -Ken
