Jumping in kind of late here, read Total Loss by Jack Coote and revised by
Paul Gelder. It's a fascinating read on yacht losses at sea and what went
wrong. Especially helpful is the failures that occurred after their initial
accident. In one account 3-4 different bilge pumps failed for various
reasons on one vessel.
Also, many had to abandon their yachts. The decision making process is
describe by those who had to take that fearful plunge and surviving to tell
their story.
In some cases, you here their accounts of life in a raft until rescue.
