    Re: biodegradability of steel.

    While steel corrodes annoyingly fast on a boat that is still in use it is
    amazing how long the hulls remain more or less intact once under the water.

    There are some 100 yo hulks used as break waters near here.

    Modern steel yacht construction used corrosion resistant corten steel and
    even stainless steel. These would probably last longer.

     

    One advantage of steel and aluminum is its ability to be recycled.

    Perhaps the original poster meant "biodegradable". Wood, steel, and
    aluminum - "aluminium" for some of you ;) - all fall into that category.
    FRP does not...or at least, it's decay cycle is quite a bit longer than the
    others.
