Chip,
Interesting story. Instead of disposing of the crew, the pirates
apparently kept them around. Wonder if they were using them to run
the boat (perhaps the pirates couldn't?) or were being held for
possible ransom later? Would be interesting to hear what the USN
personnel find/found out when they complete(d) the entire episode.
I think it is just another indication that this is an area to stay
away from. As the poor get poorer, those with even a little more are
seen as rich and attacked. Sometimes just being there is grounds
enough to take whatever they have without regard to whether they are
richer or poorer. Sometimes, it might be the flag that the vessel
carries that determines whether they are attacked or not.
It's getting more and more difficult to know where to go since these
things are beginning to happen in more places. Still, keeping on top
of where things are occurring and staying away from those places is
the best way to avoid being victimized.
OTOH, there are those that would say that the many
states/municipalities in the U.S., and perhaps elsewhere also, that
have enacted anti-anchoring ordinances, require payment for the
privilege of anchoring in areas where it is "supposed" to be free,
removed marinas in favor of condo complexes and business development,
severely restrict or prohibit liveaboards, heavily tax boats/boat
owners as if they were "gazillionaires" thereby driving them to other
states and countries, etc. are just as much pirates as those in all
the listed areas. I guess pirates come in all shapes, sizes, etc.
Maybe your "pirate" may well be somebody else's "great 'guy' next
door who wouldn't hurt a fly." Maybe.
Rick
