    Len,

We purchased the last one in stock of the model monitor previous to this
    one:
    http://www.marinecomp.com/12_sealed_monitor.htm

We purchased both the monitor and the sealed marine computer together and
got a package price, with a discount on the monitor since it was the last
one of that model. Only difference is that ours only does 800x600 and the
new model does 1024x768 resolution. Since I have older eyes, I am quite
happy with the 800x600 because don't need to wear reading glasses to read
the depth numbers on the charts. Would need glasses at 1024x768 to read
those important little numbers. Also was quite happy with the price because
we bought it for $1800 vs the $3795 for the new model.

We can split the screen and watch a DVD at the helm during daylight on
passages, but obviously can't do that in the night vision mode.

I don't think that you need to purchase a monitor to support the night
vision. It is controlled by the software. I have tested it here at home on
my Huyndai B90A monitor and it also displays the night vision mode just
fine, and so does my husband's Toshiba laptop.

As for the red reading lights, you are correct. Definitely not to be used
where there is ambient light. I like your idea of changing some of the
overhead lights to red. We have two lights over the nav station and I would
like to change one to red. But our boat is 24v and that might be a little
harder to find, at least here in the US.

    Thanks for the info.

    Judy

    Hy Judy,

I have no experience with Maxsea but a lot of other
software offers a red screen for nights. A red screen
    doesn't bother me at nights.

I'm replacing the hungry 12v halogen bulbs put about
everywhere in my ceiling by "warm white" led's. On
strategic places I replace them by red leds, operated
    by a separate switch.

It seems red light doesn't influence the
susceptibility of your black and white receptors so
even when you have read your book with (pure) red
light (I wouldn't do this tied to a pier near a window
;-) ) your night vision will remain intact.

What make/model waterproof monitor did you purchase?
    Does it support night vision?

    Regards, Len.
