The difficulty I find with the red screen at night is that you lose
the color on the charts so that you can't tell - or not tell very
well- the variations on land and the depths because they are all red.
It is also harder to read the text. Bob doesn't like it.

I find that the newer Capn has a way to intensify the blue and green,
but I haven't tried that yet, or if I tried it found that it wasn't
    satisfactory.

We have an option to dim the daytime settings so that the colors are
normal but the screen is very dim. Unfortunately the task bar and any
information around the edges of the screen are not correspondingly
dimmed. Mostly I just set the screen to dim and auto-hide the task
    bar and any menus.

We are rarely out at night inshore and I guess the ability to read the
chart details doesn't matter so much when in the middle of the ocean,
but I do like to be able to see it when I'm doing a coastal overnight.

We also have to dim the instruments - i.e. the tachometer, wind
direction and speed, depth and temperature gauge etc. and the GPS
    screen BTW.
