    Hi Ken,
You may be referring to my recent post about being prepared - and I totally agree with the "you don't know what you don't know" concept! Learned of it in detail while watching cost escalate on a construction project that was spiraling out of control at the time. ;-)

When I bought my 1st boat I read as much as possible including one book called, "Desperate Voyage" about a guy who found himself seperated from his wife at the end of WW2 - not having any luck finding transportation to her in Australia he decided to buy a sailboat and "learn to sail" bu sailing from Panama to Galapogos Is. After a very eventful voyage he was caught in a hurricane and what was in the pages that followed consisted of hearing a recount of a man slowly starving to death. Very depressing.

I won't ruin the ending in case someone's reading it, but I suspect a lot of new sailors think they can "learn to sail" like they might learn to ride a bicycle. Unfortunately if a mistake is made while learning to ride a bike, only the sidewalk and your butt will suffer, out on the deep blue in a boat, possibly with your family, a lot more is at risk.

You wrote:<<a guy posting here about a year ago who was going to buy a boat, spend a couple of weeks or so sailing about a bit, then take off for the blue yonder.I wonder what happened? Anybody hear anything from him recently">>
We may never know what happens to those people - they may have made their destination safely, may be at the bottom of the sea or may have left sailing altogether after learning what's actually involved - that it's not always blue skies and warm breezes. Sometimes there's terror - but the terror balances the whole experience if you're "prepared".

;-) Sorry -- don't want to sound like I'm preaching, but if I can get one new sailor to last long enough to become an old sailor, it'll be worth it. There's an old saying in flying circles - "there are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are very few old, bold pilots." Applies similarily to sailing.

    Sincerely,
    Larry T

The thread about not "being prepared" reminded me of that guy posting here
about a year ago who was going to buy a boat, spend a couple of weeks or so
sailing about a bit, then take off for the blue yonder.
I wonder what happened? Anybody hear anything from him recently?
With sailing, it is not what you know you do not know that will hurt you, it
is what you do not know you do not know, to paraphrase a recent humorous
politician. Almost as bad as "Greenspeak", but there is a kernel of truth to
      it.
The only way to find out is to find out, but it is best to do that before
your life is at stake ("I" think) .-Ken
