I think we'd be amazed at the utter incompetance in some skippers. Granted,
some are just ignorant and inexperienced. But I believe a lot of people
setting sail (or power) have little idea of the consequences of being caught
    out in heavy weather.

Also, some people have no idea of the needs for navigating and using dead
reckoning even though a GPS is being used. A backup is always a good idea
because your life and often the lives of your family may be put at risk.
Weather forecast are notoriously inaccurate - even the next 24 hours can be
a crapshoot with often unexpected storms popping up and causing great
damage. Naturally, a prudent skipper will be as prepared as possible even
    though things will happen.

But some people are totally unprepared - I've been in my marina when a large
power yacht has steamed up the creek - in the middle because it looks right
to someone who doesn;t know what "those red and green things are?" - I
couldn;t believe they asked that - of course, they were grounded at the time
wondering how they'd find someone to tow them off. We suggested they wait
    for high tide.

When people put so little preparation into going boating it;s no wonder some
get into trouble. Like the 6 (!!)fishermen out in a 12' skiff who the CG
have to pick up because it capsizes when one of them moves just a little!

    Rant off -

    Sincerely,
    Larry T Catalina 27

There is a good size story, with pictures, in the Sat. Washington Post
about him and his ride. Should never had left NS. Yeh, I know this
sounds like monday morning quarterbacking but construction of a time
line, I believe, will show some pretty fuzzy thinking. At least he's
    alive and well!
