Liza and Andy Copeland didn't just cruise for many years in that Beneteau
(s/v Bagheera); they did a circumnavigation and were quite pleased with the
    performance and safety of the boat. It was a First series, not an Oceanis;
and they opted for the deep keel version. They did have the standing
rigging installed one size larger than normal Beneteau specs for that model
boat. As best I remember from their books and her lectures, that was the
only structural change that they made to the boat.

One other thought. The Moorings had Beneteau 461s sailed to their bases in
Tahiti, Tonga, New Zealand and Australia. So others have sailed that model
boat for that distance. It would not be my first choice, but can be done.
We owned a 461 until just a few months ago. We sold it and bought an Amel,
which we thought would be both more comfortable and safe for the cruising we
plan for the next decade or so. But we did really love the 461. Sails
    great.

    Ian,
I met Liza Copeland at strictly sailboat show in April, she is an author
and leature. She and her husband and three children have cruised on a
BENETEAU for many years. I was surprised to learn that they were using that
kind of a boat. The only thing I would add is one man sailed a Cal 25 around
the world, so there are extremes. A lot of prep and modification went into
the Cal 25. The skill level of the crew and the luck of never running into
weather and seas that are going to tear some boats apart. Check out their
website http://www.aboutcruising.com/ I would love to have a sugar scoop
stearn to swim off and mediterranean style dock. If you get into a following
sea you will wish you had a canoe stern.
    Rob
