    The USCG can hear your 5 watt hand held from a long ways away and if they
    can't you might get a relay from another boat. I have a handheld GPS and
    handheld VHF as emergency backups with plenty of AA batteries. I have made
    a special cable to connect my handheld VHF to the main antenna in a jam.
     
    I use my handheld VHF (with handheld antenna) all the time as it is in the
    cockpit and the fixed VHF is below. The range is very good, even on the 1
    watt setting (3 - 5 miles). 5 - 10 on the 5 watt setting. Hooked up to the
    main antenna, don't know but I'd expect to get 15 or more.
     
    Pumps are to get enough water out so you can find the leak and fix it.
