    All hands,
Make sure the lights are L.E.D. as they will last 100,000 hours, low voltage requirement and take the vibrations (pounding in some of our cases). AGM batteries are submerisble, when it all goes under, time to have the VHF handheld. I think the Uniden Mystic with GPS makes sense. I know of a boat that was lost when the radio quit, when the batties went under, a hand held could have saved it.

Thank you for the story and sorry your trip to Santa Cruz Island was
cancelled. I just came back from a 3 week solo sail San Diego to Santa Cruz
and Santa Rosa on my Catalina 25. In earlier days, I had a much bigger
boat. One fine day I was motoring along in Lake Michigan. Suddenly, BOTH
bilge pump alarm lights came on (I had 3 pumps and 2 were wired to alarm
lights at the helm station). I opened the engine hatch to find a lot of
water. Shutting down the engine, I found a hole blown in a hose. I patched
it with duct tape and limped into the nearest port. $7 later I had a new
hose and was underway again. The bilge was very clean (thankfully fresh
    water).

Those little red lights by the helm saved the day. Instead of a major
disaster, it was a little frightening for a moment but easily solved. 3,
2000 gph pumps also did their job. Thankfully, batteries never went under.
