Goose - Yes, I my boat is a 43' Ketch. But I'm marconi rigged. So no
advise on gaff rigging other than it requires a bit more care when
raising sail (and a bit more strength). I think that the best thing
about a split rig arrangement is the different sail configuration you
can create to accommodate the weather. I often sail single-handed and
if the weather is up, I'll sail jib & jiggers (jib and mizzen only).
In like winds, my boat will do 8.5kt with main & jib, and 7.5kt with
mizzen and jib. If the weather comes up even more, it is easy to 1/2
furl (reef?) the jib and put a reef in the mizzen. Don't have to
fight the big main (it is secured and effectively out of the way).
When I had my mizzen made, I had them put the second reef points (very
deep)and I use that as a storm sail (also use that as a positioning
    sail when at anchor).

Good luck with your new boat.
