One BIG problem I have seen is that people get new computers which are under warranty. Where YOU can CARRY a computer through customs easily, if you try to SHIP it over and back through customs you may be asked for duty, also there are long waits for processing at customs. I have met possibly 10 cruisers in this situation, all unhappy. Plan on laptop failure once a year, but YMMV.

Garmin now uses Explorer based maps and Maptech did, Maptech may have their own now, also reputed to be excellent. US Gov't charts for the area are too out of date and just plain inaccurate. Older Garmin and C-Map were not detailed enough to get you in a harbor. If you do not carry paper charts, take 2 computers, it is impossible to get a computer fixed in remote places.
