You mentioned Bahamas, there you need Explorer brand charts (paper or electronic), but if you are set up for raster charts, you should be able to pick up some CD copies on your way in from other boats. Garmin now uses Explorer based maps and Maptech did, Maptech may have their own now, also reputed to be excellent. US Gov't charts for the area are too out of date and just plain inaccurate. Older Garmin and C-Map were not detailed enough to get you in a harbor. If you do not carry paper charts, take 2 computers, it is impossible to get a computer fixed in remote places.

      Thank you, Len,
That was a very helpful discussion. As a matter of fact I do have a
handheld Garmin GPSMap with Bluechart CD maps, but am not sure whether I
should stay with that or go in a different direction. As far as I can tell
the fixed mount GPS Garmin plotters all use plug in memory cards for maps,
while my handheld used a CD and communicates with my PC. I'm just thinking
that there might be a system which would integrate the various ways of
      viewing the charts.
At any rate, your discussion and logic is very welcome. Thank you.
