Hi Sal,
We are still busy preparing our boat and ourselves for a long stay
on board... We're planning on leaving Holland for the Med in 2007,
maybe 2008, so I haven't bought any paper charts yet.
When you're referring to electronic charts, I use a vector-based PC-
chartplotter called Tsunamis by Transas. It's a MSWindows-
application. Next to paper charts I use it as a backup for an
unplanned landfall. Wherever I am, Tsunamis allows me to navigate
with my own position plotted on the chart-screen.
Because I've installed an AIS-receiver and Tsunamis '99 doesn't
support AIS, I can copy any chart of any detail-level from Tsunamis
into my other chartplotter, SeaClear, which does support AIS and
presents all AIS-sending vessels around me on the screen, together
with their course, speed, name, MMSI-nr, etc.. Especially at night
in an unfamiliar region this increases safety. Still have to use
radar and/or look out for other non AIS-transmitting vessels of
course...
I use the complete version with the World Chart Folio 2000.
It takes a bit of getting used to, cause the user-interface has this
oldfashioned use of the mouse, but it's 100% stabile and never
crashes on me. It covers the world with detailed maps of all world
wide coastal lines, tidal info, port-info, etc. The level of detail
is great. The vector-charts allow me to drill down from total world-
view to the various piers in every marina.
Regards, Len.
