Thanks - I've gotten the info from Sunsail and Moorings but thought I'd ask the list and get an impartial answer - thanks for providing that! Other than the liability of carrying a large loan and the possibility of people deciding to do other stuff than sail (!) it seems to be an ideal way to buy a 5 or 6 year old boat for minimal $ with the 3-5 weeks of sailing per year icing on the cake - assuming all goes well.
I assume there's some historical stats showing the % of time a boat is chartered?
Thanks again --
Sincerely,

It's true.
Go to the sunsail website and read about owning a charter.
Basically the bank buys the boat, you put it incharter for 3-5 years, the company manages the bookings and boat maintenance, you get 2-3 weeks a year to sail and if everything goes according to plan the charters pay for the bank loan, management fees and boat maintenance. At the end of the period you get your used boat back.
If things don't go so well, there aren't enough charters booked to pay the costs and you're on the hook for whatever is left to be paid, and you get back a boat that's been throughly trashed and needs a major refit before you can sail her.
Having said all that, we bought a great catamaran out of charter. She's too old to be put back in but I'd consider going this route as the cheapest way to sail 3-5 weeks a year.

Are you happy with the financial arrangement? Their advertisements make it sound like you don't have any major expenses, someone else makes the payments, Moorings manages all charters and you get to use the boat quite a lot.
Is the boat yours at the end of 5 or 6 years?
It sounds like something too good to be true.

We are owners of a Jeanneau SO 49 in the Moorings charter fleet. They call it a M494. We get to use our boat or other 494s in their fleet around the world; at all their Mooring Bases. We use our boat in the BVI and anywhere else when we use other owners' boats it is referred to as a reciprical boat or charter.
As owners we only have to pay $60/day upto 14 days and nothing after 14 days.

Educate me. What is a recipricol? Is it like a boat
