    Lee,

    In addition:
In answer to your questions: A "Barge Roller" fender (there are
probably other "proper" names for them)is basicly a heavy rubber
roller a bit like a large typewriter roller. 2" to 3" thick, 2 to
3feet long, on a steel rod with a ring to hang it from. I have no
idea where you might get such a beast, probably the Bargees made
their own and I have not seen one since the barge trafic stopped on
the Thames. But they would certainly be the answer for the small
locks where the water comes almost to the top of the concrete. This
seems to be where most people sustain damage. Some of these were
made by threading rings of hard rubber onto the rod which had a large
washer welded to the bottom end. If you hang them between conventioal
fenders they only come into play when these are pushed out of the
    way.

A Rond Anchor is merely a piece of say 1/2" x 24" steel rod with a
ring on one end and sharpened on the other. it is bent in the middle
to form a slightly more than 90deg. hook which is hammered into the
bankside with a mooring line attached. These can be bought,
galanised, from canal boat chandlers. I have two and they were most
useful in France. I might add it is important to sink the point right
down to the bend so that the attachment part lays flat on the ground.
Even on barge moorings, where the bollards are too far apart to use,
there is usually a crack in the concrete where they can be wedged.

    Greetingz,
    Len.
