    Yes, the energy used to spin the wind gen is lost from forward motion. It would seem that this would be most noticed close hauled and least noticed running near hull speed where hull drag will be a bigger percentage of the total energy. Now, is this 2kts or .2kts lost??
     I agree that downwind would be a speed gain, but, I doubt that you will get much usable electric power then.

         You state that a wind gen doesn't induce drag while running. I
      would think that when sailing close-hauled, a wind gen does induce
      drag, even when running, as every appendage on the boat does except
      the sails. When sailing downwind, I suppose it actually assists.
      Where am I going wrong?
