We just returned yesterday from several days in Florida looking at
boats and property and think I've decompressed enough to do email.
:'( There are hundreds and hundreds! I think I will be using the
    delete key a lot.

Drove about 2k miles while there. Didn't think Florida was that
large. ;-) While there, I had my laptop (powerbook). I thought I'd
be able to log on and download my email and do Internet research.
What I found was something different.

I think we had connectivity at two hotels where I was able to receive
email early in the trip. One "said" they did but couldn't connect and
maintain a connection long enough to do anything. Another said they
did but found it only in their lobby. One place wanted us to disable
our encryption (WEP) before we could get online. (We declined.) One
place where we were we were able to get a signal and able to download
    but when I asked a question, I was told they didn't have a wi-fi
connection. Apparently I was accessing someone's personal wi-fi set
up that hadn't been secured so I signed off and didn't use it as soon
as it became apparent what was happening. Felt "funny" using
something like that. Still others looked at us like we were from mars
or someplace. When we were able to get email, we were unable to
"send" since "relaying" was not allowed.

This got us to thinking about how it will be when cruising. We will
need to have communication due to health problems/ages of relatives.
Our starting point could be well out of the local area since we will
likely start from where we find the boat. That means we can't count
on just coastal cruising the local area. We will be having a HAM set
up so that might be the real key for most or maybe not since I won't
be able to conduct business that way.

What has been the experience of those out there? Were we just unlucky
with our choice of places to stay (mid-priced places) on (well.
actually near) the water or inland or is there just not as much wi-fi
out there as I thought? Is it available (reasonably so as in free or
low cost) in the Caribbean, Mexico and places further South on both
coasts and the EU? We want to be careful and not encounter key stroke
loggers and the like so we would likely not be frequenting Internet
    cafes.

Now, back to the big email catch up aka the big delete key marathon.

    Rick
