    Colin,

      Having done the ditch a time or three and taken the land route a
    couple of times to help other boats as crew, I'd suggest you pony up
    the money and take it through. Yes, it's expensive when you consider
    the cost/nm but it's cheaper than going around, it's a no-brainer as
    far as navigation goes, it's a unique part of the world, it's
    something you can check off as having _done_ it, and it leaves you in
    a great position for the Pacific.
