If your mast is much longer than the boat, you may want
to think about sending it on by road - a lot of people
do this. One less thing to worry about in the locks.
A boat with anything over 3ft draft will have problems
if you go off the BIG commercial canals, where 5ft is ok.
The problem is not so much travelling along the canal,
but trying to moor within leaping distance of the bank.
Moorings generally free (but always check local regs -
in a few places it's forbidden). If you want showers,
electricity, pump-out etc., then use yacht clubs -
very cheap rates and very welcoming.
