For what it's worth, my 2 cents:
I single-handed across from Beaufort, NC to Falmouth,
UK. All I had was an EPIRB without GPS and no SSB. My
feeling is that anything can break and will create
unnecessary anxiety when it does. Just tell your
girlfriend you will get there when you get there...the
essence of cruising. Or better yet, get her to join
you.
