Yup.
Catamarans are affordable if you are comparing cost per square
foot of living space. Unfortunately, even the smallest cruising
cat has a lot of square feet.
Since safety in catamarans is closely related to size (length
and beam), I don't think that most people would consider anything
less than 40' "blue water capable." To finish out that blue
water boat, add top-quality over-sized components. Expensive.
An intermediate "first time buyer" boat is a great way to
waste money. Why buy a boat that won't do what you want?
Do whatever you need to do to make up your mind about cruising
and then buy the boat that will make it work for you.
If I was looking to go cruising on a budget, I would look
for a steel monohull, 40 - 45 feet, preferably one that
has been cruised. The best places to find such a thing
would be any downwind corner of the world on the main
cruising highway: Hawaii, Australia, Mexico, etc. I've
got nothing against fiberglass boats, it is just that
many of them are built too cheaply for blue water use
and you'll burn a lot of time and energy finding this
out.
My blue water capable catamaran, Endless Summer, is for
sale, but she's not what most would call affordable.
