David, which countries $ do you refer to? In Australia you can buy a
brand new sailaway 40' Cat, build in industrial quality resin-infusion
composite for AU$ 200,000, that is about US$ 150,000, or you purchase
the kit - fits into a standard container - and save labour cost. If
you insist in European cats, then you pay the surcharge as everything
is terrible expensive here plus the overhead of the American Import
    company.

I sailed Asia, Indian Ocean and Med, whenever our speed was below 50%
of windspeed I was nervous, unless beating, as in going up Red Sea,
headwind from Hanish Islands to Athens, yes that was slow (over
ground) and jamming and noisy and wet, but never ever a problem in
galley or bunks, sometimes in the front toilets, like a free ride in a
roller coaster ;-) ok, use rear toilets.

World cruising stands for long distance cruising, and this in the long
run, is never done against the wind, you cannot beat the tradewinds,
you go with them. But downwind with a cat in the trades is a beautiful
ride, maybe that is, what Rick was thinking about.
