As a list moderator I certainly don't want this
conversation to degenerate into a shouting match,
but I think I should explain what I mean by
"morally wrong".
In my opinion, it is "morally wrong" to charge
(tax) me for a service (collection and analysis
of weather data) and then deny me access to the
data, which I have paid to have collected and
analyzed, meanwhile giving the data only to a
third party so they can charge me, AGAIN, for
"repackaging" the data, which I ALREADY OWN.
Think about this:
You hire a private detective to follow your wife
(not implying anything here) and tell you where
she's been going and who she's been seeing.
The detective spends weeks trailing her and
gathering evidence.
When you ask the detective what he's discovered
he tells you that you'll have to subscribe to his
buddy Joe's data publishing service to get that
information, and Joe will charge you a fee for
formating and presenting the data.
Is this situation sound, morally?
How about this:
You are the CEO of a pharmaceutical company,
PharmCo.
Sam is a research scientist who has been working
in your R&D department.
When it comes time for Sam to produce a report of
his work he tells you that he turned the data
over to a publishing company and you'll have to
pay PharmBooks Inc a fee to view the data.
Is this "morally correct"?
Not looking to start a fight, just illustrating
my position....
